How Does DBDOC Work With My System?

How is DBDOC Read-Only?

DBDOC takes a snapshot of your entire system, processes your system files, then compiles the information. The result is a hyperlinked, read-only encyclopedia for your system that you can browse through using our Hyperview browser. See the list of file types supported.

How Real-Time Monitoring Works

Through our CIUMON software, DBDOC provides your technicians, managers, and ABB INFI 90® specialist with the powerful ability to monitor live data with read-only access. Our unrestricted license allows unlimited users.

Real-time viewing access is provided using a serial or SCSI connection to the ABB INFI 90® CIU interface and a TCP/IP connection to the DBDOC browser. The DBDOC's CIUMON server interacts with DBDOC to fetch and display the live block values.

Rovisys OPC90 Lite (see below) is required for SCSI support capability, for ICI03 support, or for multiplexing.

What is Rovisys OPC90® and Why Do I Need It?

Rovisys OPC90 is required for SCSI support for real-time monitoring, as illustrated in our networking DBDOC diagram (.pdf, 45K).

The Rovisys Company is a well-established company providing software products, services and solution to industry. They created the product Rovisys OPC90 Lite® or Lite Plus®, which caters to the needs of DBDOC installation with these important functions:

  • Read-only access to the CIU (in versions released Dec 2005 and later).
  • Supports serial and SCSI CIUs.
  • Multiplexes multiple programs so they can share of a single CIU, allowing each program to work as if it had full control.
  • 250 (Lite) or 500 (Lite Plus) tag OPC Server, giving the user entry into OPC applications.
  • Enforces read-only access to CIU data.

Why you should upgrade your Rovisys OPC90®

You need this latest version of Rovisys OPC90 Lite®, Rovisys OPC90 Lite Plus®, Rovisys OPC90 Standard®, or Rovisys OPC90 Unlimited® because it has a read-only feature that will add or improve Business LAN use of DBDOC. If you are already using a direct CIU connection, you should upgrade your Rovisys OPC90 product to protect the plant. If you are using a "hole" in the firewall, you can eliminate it, which might make your IT security people ecstatic.

DBDOC users asked us to offer a secure path for DBDOC read-only real-time data between the DCS (Process) Local Area Network and Business (IT) LAN in order to permit the safe viewing of live data from the Business LAN. New standards in the power industry specifically prohibit a normal network connection between the two LANs, and the previous Rovisys OPC90 version allowed full CIU access through the OPC90 connection.

To meet this request, we worked with The RoviSys Company to upgrade the OPC90 product line to support a read-only connection to a CIU. The new versions of OPC90 and OPC90 Lite support configuration for CIUMon with read-only access to only two functions - get block values and get block specifications.

This feature means that a physical serial link from CIUMon on the Business LAN to the CIU (via OPC90) on the Process LAN is absolutely safe. In the unlikely event that CIUMon is aborted and a "rogue" program grabs the port intending to wreak havoc, nothing can be done to the process. Clients can be assured that an intruder or employee cannot make changes to the process from the Business LAN.

We are pleased to offer this added security to DBDOC users as a product, or an upgrade.
